Port has a tough draft choice to make

FOLLOW the 2012 AFL national draft live from 7pm.

The future of each club will become a little clearer in the 60 minutes or so after GWS reads out the name of the No.1 pick at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.

That is widely expected to be Lachie Whitfield, a star midfielder from the Dandenong Stingrays who has had the top selection locked away for most of the year.

The Giants have the first three selections and are tipped to use them to snaffle skilful wingman Jonathan O'Rourke and his Calder Cannons teammate Lachie Plowman, who is considered the best key-position prospect in the draft.

With Melbourne likely to use the fourth pick on slick South Australian Jimmy Toumpas, the Bulldogs have the chance to shape their future with picks five and six.

Jackson Macrae, a half-forward/midfielder with X-factor, is set to go at pick five and the Dogs are set to take a risk on explosive Bendigo midfielder Jake Stringer with pick six.

It is believed the Dogs made the call on Stringer late, picking him ahead of exciting forward Troy Menzel.

Stringer broke two bones in his leg 18 months ago, giving him an awkward running gait. But he has the ability to turn games off his own boot - kicking 9.6 in his return from injury in the TAC Cup.

That leaves Port Adelaide to grab Ollie Wines - who had hoped to play alongside best mate Jack Viney at the Demons - while the Brisbane Lions are expected to take either medium forward Sam Mayes or key forward Kristian Jaksch.

Richmond has had its eye on tough Northern Knights midfielder Nick Vlastuin for months and it will be a major surprise if the player nicknamed "Tigger" doesn't land at Punt Rd.

Two locks in the first round are Joe Daniher to Essendon with pick 10 and Jack Viney to Melbourne with pick 26 as father-son selections.
